Breaking News: OVAL BEACH...NO SALT...NO OIL! |
We borrowed the slogan, "OVAL BEACH....NO SALT....NO OIL" from our friends at the T-shirt shop in downtown Saugatuck to illustrate the good news that we have been assured that the upstream oil spill in Marshall, MI is being contained and will not reach our harbor or Lake Michigan. We received the following update from Scott Corbin Emergency Coordinator for Allegan County via Kirk Harrier, Saugatuck City Manager yesterday afternoon. I personally want to thank the EPA, the Corps of Engineers and our legislators Bob Genetski, Pete Hoekstra and Fred Upton plus Bill Huizenga for their lightening fast responses to the CVB's emails requesting help at the onset of this problem. 1.) The spill is currently contained at Marrow Dam in the Galesburg area. 2.) Federal and State clean-up officials involved in the spill stated to Mr. Corbin that everyone is ahead of the curve with regards to the spill. 3.) Skimmer boats have been deployed from New York and should be in the area by Wednesday. 4.) At this stage the spill is not anticipated to go past the Marrow Dam. 5.) If the spill were to go past the Marrow Dam, there are a number of other stop measures in place that would prevent the spill from reaching the Kalamazoo Harbor and Lake Michigan. The City of Plainwell already has diversionary remediation in place as they are working on PCB clean up. Other stop measures would be the City of Allegan Dam and the Consumers Energy Dam (Lake Allegan). |

They will issue a press release with the specific details shortly. |

As the New York Times said: "Saugatuck sits along the Kalamazoo River just as it curls and twists its way toward Lake Michigan. And nearly all benches, windows, overlooks and bar seats seem inevitably aimed at capturing the best view of one body of water or the other. One afternoon, I gazed out from the wide balcony at the Bayside Inn toward the mesmerizing rhythm of boats floating by along the river — kayaks, sailboats, fishing guides, pleasure cruisers, even an old-time hand-cranked chain ferry, which carried its passengers on the short trip across the river."
Saugatuck is one of the most fantastic port cities on the Lake Michigan coast. With dozens of fine restaurants offering everything from pub burgers to fine cuisine; coffee, ice cream and pastry shoppes galore; galleries and antique shops to explore; and every kind of fun for the whole family; Saugatuck is THE place to spend your vacation and leisure time. Our scenic boardwalk is one of the most popular places to stroll, while checking out the people, shops, boats, and excitement that make Saugatuck, "the Cape Cod of the Midwest". And of course, our charter fishing is outstanding, from May through October! |
